When everything is blurred, everything is equal. By „unblurring“ certain areas of an image I give them more importance. The conscious act of putting something into focus will make it more important and therefore more memorable.

Installation Concept
For the Homework topic “blurred” I chose the medium of film to form an interactive installation concept.  Watching from afar, not focusing on anything leads to a blurred vision. Everything is equally important or equally unimportant. However, when interacting with my surrounding by putting something into focus I give it more importance. I become aware of more details, gather more information and might have a clearer memory thereof. Building a personal connection to an object or scenery makes it memorable and unique compared to the many vague blurred recollections of the past.

To show the context in which this effect can be used interactively I chose an installation where you can touch a certain part of the video projected onto a wall, which then slows down and removes all blur layers for you to properly see things. This represents the real-life equivalent of focussing on and interacting with things and thus becoming aware and remember details more clearly after doing so.
Process
The first step was about figuring out how to create a good shot where there were multiple layers of things moving, each able to be divided into their own section without a great amount of overlapping into other areas. After filming, I edited the clips in after effects, using multiple effects and duplicate layers to achieve different blur styles for all kinds of moving objects.
