AR Animation

This animation shows a morning routine sometime in the future. It shows a kind of dystopian world, where all is controlled by your computer, removing and changing what defines your individual personality. To set myself a challenge, I limited my time on this project to 4 days, to see what I could achieve in such a short time.

3D Holograms
To create realistic-looking holograms, I used 3D models of different objects as a basis. Using Video Copilot Element in After Effects adjusting materials, surface options, blend mode and different polygon settings, I was able to embed these holograms into different kinds of environments.
Tracking stationary or moving objects, surfaces or single points need different kinds of tracking. For a simple and small object that doesn't have great depth, single-point tracking works best. As soon as a 3D object needs to be placed in frame two-point tracking is useful as it tracks rotation and scale automatically. Lastly depending on the situation tracking large surfaces can either be done with corner pin or planar tracking.

For each film clip new criteria applied so I had to figure out what to use in which situation. Through this, I learned the intricate details of what is possible regarding motion tracking in After Effects.

Combining the two methods above, holograms and motion tracking, I created a few test videos and learned how to perfect the combining of these two effects.

Planar Tracking
To create a scene the first step was to draw a storyboard, on what to record and where holograms or screens will appear. To get the best sound effects, I later recorded room tone and all kinds of sounds separately and edited them in Premiere Pro to match the footage and color grade. With the footage in After Effects, I started with creating screens and holograms. For each element that appeared in the film, I had to create a tracking layer to make it stick to where it's supposed to be. Finally, after all animations were done, I went back into Premiere Pro to add a final color grading to make the whole environment feel natural.
